Rio Grande City, as mentioned in an earlier blog, is going to be the top contender for the District 30-5A title. That’s not even a question. What is a question is how good will this team be compared to the Rio Grande Valley’s elite? Right now, we said No. 6.
But if the Rattlers get a player or two to step up on the offensive or defensive lines, quarterback R.J. Alaniz continues to improve during his junior season and sophomore running back Justin Ortega is everything the coaching staff is promoting him to be, then this RGC team could easily be one of the top three teams in the Valley this season.







Wade Baker, 30, is Sports Editor of The Monitor. He graduated from Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C. in 2000 with a degree in Mass Communications and moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 2002 for a sports reporter opening at The Monitor. Baker was promoted to his current position in August of 2007 after serving as assistant sports editor for two years.
